KS3 French: Building Strong Foundations for GCSE Success

Our KS3 French programme develops students' ability to understand, speak, read and write French with increasing accuracy and independence.

Students progressively build their knowledge in six key areas:

🗣️ Communication

Students learn to communicate in increasingly detailed ways — from introducing themselves and answering simple questions to describing experiences, expressing opinions and explaining their ideas.

📚 Vocabulary

Students build a broad and carefully selected vocabulary base which they regularly revisit and apply in different contexts.

🔤 Grammar

Students learn how French sentences work, developing an understanding of structures such as gender, agreement, adjectives, negatives, questions and word order.

⏳ Verbs & Tenses

Students gradually develop control of different time frames, including the present, past and future, so they can describe what they do, what they have done and what they are going to or will do.

🇫🇷 Pronunciation & Phonics

Students develop their ability to recognise French sound patterns, pronounce words accurately and read French aloud with increasing confidence.

💬 Opinions & Extended Language

As students progress, they learn to give opinions, justify them, compare ideas, use connectives and produce longer, more detailed responses.

Our KS3 French programme is suitable for students who are:

✓ lacking confidence in speaking or understanding French

✓ looking to develop stronger grammar and vocabulary

✓ looking to get ahead before GCSE

✓ keen to develop their French beyond the classroom

Students do not need to have exactly the same level of French to learn successfully together. We assess students' starting points and structure teaching so that everyone can make progress.

Students then extend their language so they can communicate about themselves, their lives and their experiences.

Areas of language may include:

• family and relationships
• school
• daily routines
• hobbies and interests
• lifestyle
• future plans
• experiences

Students develop their ability to:

• give opinions
• explain reasons
• describe people and activities
• talk about past and future events
• use a wider range of verbs
• connect ideas together

The goal:

I can describe, explain and narrate.

For example:

J'aime jouer au tennis parce que c'est amusant.

As students develop their knowledge, they begin to manipulate language more independently.

They work towards being able to:

• express more complex opinions
• justify and develop ideas
• compare different things
• use different time frames
• produce longer answers
• understand less familiar language
• communicate with greater spontaneity

Topics and contexts may include interests, entertainment, festivals, culture, experiences, ambitions and wider aspects of everyday life.

The goal:

I can express and justify my ideas in French.

For example:

Je préfère jouer au tennis plutôt que regarder le sport à la télévision parce que c'est plus actif.

Grammar is an essential part of our KS3 programme.

But students don't simply learn grammar rules and complete exercises in isolation.

We teach grammar so that students can use it to communicate.

Across the KS3 learning journey, students develop their understanding and use of:

• sentence structure
• gender and agreement
• adjectives
• questions
• negatives
• possessive adjectives
• reflexive verbs
• connectives
• comparisons
• key irregular verbs
• different time frames

Developing control of past, present and future

Students progressively learn to communicate across different time frames, including:

Present

Talking about what they do, what they like and what is happening.

Past

Talking about what they did, what happened and their experiences.

Future

Talking about plans, intentions, ambitions and what they will do.

As students become more confident, they are introduced to increasingly sophisticated grammatical structures and encouraged to manipulate language rather than simply reproduce memorised sentences.

Our KS3 programme has been carefully designed to develop the knowledge and skills students need for long-term success in French.

Lessons are not isolated activities.

Each lesson forms part of a wider learning journey, allowing students to revisit previous knowledge, develop new language and apply what they have learned in different contexts.

At the same time, we recognise that no two students arrive with exactly the same starting point.

That's why our curriculum gives us the structure to know where students are going, while our teaching gives us the flexibility to decide how they get there.

Our goal is not simply to help students pass an exam.

Our goal is to develop confident French communicators who have the vocabulary, grammar, skills and confidence to succeed when they reach GCSE — and beyond.

Private lessons allow us to focus closely on the areas where a student needs the most support — whether that's vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, speaking, writing or particular tenses.

🔄 Consolidate group learning

Students can revisit and practise language introduced in their group lessons, helping new vocabulary and grammatical structures become more secure.

🧩 Fill knowledge gaps

If a student has missed content at school or has gaps in their previous learning, private tuition provides the opportunity to address these without holding back the rest of the group.

🗣️ Build speaking confidence

One-to-one time gives students more opportunities to speak, answer questions and practise communicating without the pressure they may sometimes feel in a larger group.

🚀 Move ahead

Students who are already confident with the material can use private lessons to extend their knowledge, explore more challenging language and prepare themselves for the next stage of their learning.

💡 Learn at their own pace

Private tuition can be adapted completely to the student's needs. We can slow down when something needs more explanation, or move on when a student is ready for greater challenge.

The best of both worlds

For some students, group lessons + private tuition can be an excellent combination. Group lessons provide the opportunity to learn alongside other students, practise communication and develop confidence in a social learning environment. Private lessons provide dedicated time for individual goals, targeted support and consolidation. Together, they give students both the benefits of collaborative learning and the flexibility of personalised teaching.
