⭐ A positive first experience of French

For young children, learning a language should feel exciting, achievable and fun.

Our KS1 programme gives children the opportunity to discover French in a friendly, supportive environment where they can have a go without worrying about getting everything perfect.

We focus on building:

🗣️ Speaking confidence
👂 Listening skills
🎵 Enjoyment of language
🔤 French sounds and pronunciation
📚 Vocabulary and early language skills
🌍 Curiosity about French-speaking cultures

The aim is simple:

We want children to enjoy French now — and want to keep learning it as they grow.

🎨 How do children learn French?

Young children learn best when they are actively involved.

Our lessons combine a variety of activities so that children hear and use French repeatedly without lessons feeling repetitive.

🎵 Songs & rhymes

Songs help children become familiar with French sounds, rhythm and vocabulary in a natural and memorable way.

🎲 Games & challenges

Interactive games give children lots of opportunities to recognise and use new language while having fun.

🎭 Stories & roleplay

Children use their imagination while practising simple French in meaningful situations.

🗣️ Speaking activities

From the very beginning, children are encouraged to use French aloud through short questions, answers and conversations.

👂 Listening

Children gradually become more comfortable hearing French and responding to familiar words, phrases and instructions.

🖼️ Visual learning

Pictures, flashcards and visual prompts help children understand and remember new vocabulary.

✏️ Early reading & writing

As children become ready, we introduce simple written French, phonics and sound–spelling links.

Every activity has a purpose: helping children become more confident language learners.

🇫🇷 Your child's KS1 French journey

Throughout KS1, children explore a wide range of familiar and engaging themes.

🧠 It's more than learning words

We want children to develop the building blocks of real language learning, not simply memorise vocabulary. Throughout the programme, children gradually develop:

👂 Listening

🧩 Grammar awareness

🌍 Cultural awareness

Discovering French-speaking countries, people, places, traditions, food and celebrations.

🎯 What will my child be able to do?

✓ greet someone in French
✓ introduce themselves
✓ answer simple questions
✓ understand basic familiar spoken French
✓ respond to classroom instructions
✓ count and use numbers
✓ talk about themselves and their family
✓ name and describe familiar objects and animals
✓ talk simply about food and preferences
✓ describe people
✓ talk about activities and hobbies
✓ use simple language relating to time and weather
✓ recognise important French sounds
✓ read and write simple French words and phrases
✓ take part in short, supported conversations
✓ develop curiosity about French-speaking cultures

Most importantly, they will begin to see themselves as someone who can speak another language.

❤️ Why BELingual?

Small & supportive groups

Children have regular opportunities to participate and speak French, while receiving individual encouragement.

Carefully planned learning

Behind the games, songs and activities is a structured programme designed to gradually develop children's language skills.

Confidence before perfection

Children are encouraged to have a go, experiment with French and learn from mistakes in a positive environment.

Learning through enjoyment

We use games, songs, stories and activities because children learn particularly well when they are engaged and enjoying themselves.

A clear language journey

KS1 provides the foundations for continued French learning as children move into KS2 and beyond.

A local learning community

We welcome families from Amersham and the surrounding area into a friendly, supportive learning environment.

💬 What might you notice at home?

One of the most rewarding parts of learning a language is when children start using it outside the classroom. You may hear your child:

“Bonjour!”

“Salut!”

“J'ai six ans!”

“J'aime...”

“Regarde!”

Or suddenly hear them singing a French song they learnt in class. These little moments are signs that French is becoming something they enjoy and feel confident using.

Our KS1 programme is designed to give children a positive first experience of French while developing the foundations they can continue building throughout their education.

Small steps today. Confident language learning for the future.
