A-Level French tuition for students aged 16–18
A-Level French is a significant step up from GCSE.
Students are expected to communicate with greater independence, understand more complex French, discuss social and political issues, analyse literature and film, translate accurately and express and defend their own opinions.
At BELingual, we provide structured, supportive A-Level French tuition based on the AQA A-level French specification (7652), with lessons tailored to each student's needs.
Private A-Level tuition is currently our main A-Level provision.
If you know another student studying A-Level French, you can also create your own small group with BELingual.
A-Level French builds on the knowledge and skills developed at GCSE and takes them further.
Students develop their ability to:
The AQA course is designed as a two-year linear qualification, integrating language, culture and society.
The AQA A-level French specification includes three main areas of core study:
Students explore contemporary French-speaking society through themes including:
The changing nature of family
The 'cyber-society'
The place of voluntary work
Students also study current issues including:
Positive features of a diverse society
Life for the marginalised
How criminals are treated
These themes are studied through French-speaking countries and a range of authentic spoken and written sources.
Students develop a deeper understanding of the culture and political life of French-speaking countries.
The AQA specification includes:
Students explore French-speaking cultural heritage and its importance at national, regional and local level.
Students consider the diversity of contemporary French-language music and its place within society.
Students explore French-speaking cinema and its development and cultural importance.
Students study:
Including young people's attitudes towards political engagement and the future of political life.
Including trade unions, demonstrations, strikes and different attitudes towards political tensions.
Including political responses to immigration and the involvement of immigrants in political life.
A-Level French includes the detailed study of literary and/or film works.
Students study either:
one literary text and one film
or
two literary texts
from AQA's prescribed list.
The exact works studied will depend on the student's school or college.
Lessons can support students with:
Students are expected to move beyond describing what happens and develop critical and analytical responses to the work they have studied.
If your school or college has already chosen its AQA text and/or film, please let us know when enquiring so that tuition can be tailored to the correct course.
The speaking component is an important part of A-Level French.
Students complete an Individual Research Project, choosing a subject or key question that relates to a French-speaking country or countries.
They research their topic using French-language sources and then present and discuss their findings as part of the AQA speaking assessment. BELingual can help students with:
The research project is designed to develop students' ability to research, analyse, summarise and discuss information in French.
A-Level students need considerably greater control and accuracy in French.
BELingual lessons can include grammar development in the context of the topics students are studying. This may include:
AQA expects students to build on the grammar studied at GCSE and AS level. At A-Level, students also develop areas including the passive voice in all tenses and more advanced forms of the subjunctive.
Students also practise both:
French → English translation
and
English → French translation
using unseen passages, as required by the AQA assessment.
AQA A-Level French is assessed through three examination papers.
This paper assesses:
Students work with complex factual and abstract material from a range of spoken and written sources.
Both translation tasks use passages of at least 100 words.
This paper assesses the student's knowledge and understanding of their studied literary text and/or film.
Students are expected to demonstrate:
Students answer essay-style questions in French.
The speaking assessment has two parts.
Students discuss a sub-theme from one of the four AQA themes.
Students give a short presentation on their research project followed by a discussion with the examiner.
The speaking paper therefore requires students to combine prepared knowledge with spontaneous communication.
Private tuition is currently the main way BELingual supports A-Level students.
Every lesson can be tailored to the student's current needs and their school or college programme.
