🇫🇷 KS2 FRENCH

Fun, structured French lessons for children aged 8–11

Build confidence. Develop real French. Prepare for the future.

Our KS2 French classes help children move from learning individual words and phrases towards using French with greater confidence and independence.

Through speaking, listening, reading, writing, games, roleplay, projects and cultural activities, children develop practical French while building the vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation skills they will need for the next stage of their education.

⭐ French that children enjoy — with real progress behind it

At KS2, children are ready to take their French further.

We want lessons to remain fun and engaging, while gradually introducing children to more structured language learning. Our programme develops:

🗣️ Speaking confidence
👂 Listening and understanding
📖 Reading skills
✏️ Writing skills
🔤 French phonics and pronunciation
🧩 Grammar and sentence building
🌍 Cultural understanding
💡 Independence and communication skills

Children are encouraged to use what they know in new situations rather than simply memorising vocabulary for one topic.

The goal is confident communication — not just knowing a list of French words.

🎨 How is KS2 French taught?

We believe children learn best when lessons are active, purposeful and enjoyable.

Our KS2 lessons use a wide range of activities to keep children engaged while giving them regular opportunities to practise and apply their French.

🎲 Games & interactive activities

Games provide repetition and practice while encouraging children to listen carefully and respond in French.

🗣️ Speaking & conversation

Children regularly practise questions, answers, opinions and short conversations, gradually becoming more confident speaking without relying entirely on a script.

🎭 Roleplay

Real-life situations such as ordering food, travelling or asking for information give children opportunities to use French for a purpose.

🎵 Songs & repetition

Songs, rhymes and repetition help reinforce vocabulary, pronunciation and important language patterns.

📖 Reading

Children progress from familiar words and phrases towards short texts and adapted or authentic French materials.

✏️ Writing

Writing develops gradually from copying and adapting models towards producing their own short sentences and connected pieces of French.

🧠 Retrieval & review

Previously learned language is regularly revisited so that vocabulary and structures become increasingly secure.

🌍 Culture & projects

Children discover French-speaking countries, people, traditions, places, food, sport and everyday life.

Every activity is designed to help children remember, understand and use their French.

🇫🇷 Your child's KS2 French journey

Throughout KS2, children explore familiar topics while learning to communicate in increasingly detailed ways.

👋 Personal information & family

Children develop their ability to introduce themselves, talk about their age, feelings, nationality and family, and ask others simple questions.

🏫 School & classroom

They talk about school subjects, likes and dislikes, classroom life and time, and begin giving simple reasons for their opinions.

🍎 Food & birthdays

Children learn to talk about food and preferences, order simple items and use numbers, months and dates.

👀 People & descriptions

They develop their ability to describe people using appearance, personality, age, nationality and adjectives.

🏠 Home & rooms

Children describe their home, rooms and household activities, using increasingly varied sentence structures and prepositions.

🔄 Routines & weekends

They talk about regular activities, hobbies, sport, food and drink and begin combining ideas into longer sentences.

🗺️ Travel & French cities

Children explore French cities and geography while learning language for travelling, directions, destinations and weather.

🚆 Travel by train

They practise useful transactional French through situations such as buying tickets, asking about destinations, prices and departure times.

⚽ Sport & preferences

Children discuss sports and activities, express opinions and begin explaining and justifying their preferences.

👕 Clothes & the Francophone world

They learn clothing and descriptive language while discovering the diversity of French-speaking countries around the world.

☕ Food, cafés & events

Children practise polite requests, prices and simple café conversations through realistic roleplay.

🌍 Independent communication

As children progress, they bring together vocabulary and structures from across the programme to communicate more independently.

🗣️ From short phrases to real communication

One of the most important changes during KS2 is the development of independence.

Children gradually move from:

“Je m'appelle...”

o to answering questions,

o to asking their own questions,

o to giving opinions,

o to adding reasons,

o to adapting familiar language,

o to communicating information in new situations.

For example, rather than simply learning:

J'aime le football.

children may gradually learn to say:

J'aime le football parce que c'est amusant.

And then begin adapting the structure themselves:

Je n'aime pas le tennis parce que c'est difficile.

We want children to understand that French is something they can use — not simply something they learn.

🧠 What skills will my child develop?

Our KS2 programme develops all four language skills.

👂 Listening

Children progress from recognising familiar words and phrases towards understanding short passages and identifying key information.

🗣️ Speaking

They move from rehearsed exchanges towards increasingly independent communication, opinions and short presentations.

📖 Reading

Children develop from reading familiar words and phrases towards understanding short texts and adapted or authentic French materials.

✏️ Writing

They progress from copying and adapting models towards producing their own short connected texts.

🔤 French phonics & pronunciation

Pronunciation is developed throughout the programme rather than being treated as a one-off topic.

Children learn to:

recognise common French sounds

connect sounds with spelling

notice pronunciation patterns

improve their spoken accuracy

become more confident reading French aloud

We regularly revisit phonics so that children become increasingly comfortable with the way French sounds and is written.

🧩 Grammar that children can actually use

Grammar is introduced through meaningful language rather than taught as a list of complicated rules.

As children progress, they encounter and practise:

¨ masculine and feminine nouns

¨ definite and indefinite articles

¨ question forms

¨ negatives

¨ avoir and être

¨ adjective agreement

¨ present-tense verbs

¨ prepositions

¨ conjunctions

¨ numbers and time

¨ sentence-building patterns

We don't expect children to memorise grammar for the sake of it.

We teach grammar as a tool that helps children say more.

🔄 We revisit — we don't just move on

Language learning requires repetition.

That's why vocabulary and structures from previous lessons are regularly brought back into new topics. Children may learn a structure in one context and then encounter it again weeks or months later in a completely different situation.

This helps them move from: “I remember that word.”

to: “I know how to use it.”

Our lessons include regular:

🎯 retrieval activities
🧠 vocabulary review
🗣️ speaking checks
👂 listening activities
📖 reading practice
✏️ short writing tasks
🎤 presentations and roleplay

🎯 What will my child be able to do?

As children progress through KS2, they will have opportunities to:

✓ introduce themselves and exchange personal information
✓ ask and answer questions
✓ talk about family, school and home
✓ express likes, dislikes and opinions
✓ give simple reasons for their opinions
✓ describe people and places
✓ talk about routines and activities
✓ talk about sport and hobbies
✓ discuss food and preferences
✓ order food or drinks in a café roleplay
✓ take part in a supported travel conversation
✓ ask for and understand simple directions
✓ talk about weather, time and dates
✓ understand key information from spoken French
✓ read and understand short French texts
✓ write short connected pieces of French
✓ give short presentations
✓ use familiar language in new contexts
✓ become increasingly confident communicating without a script

Most importantly, they will develop the confidence to have a go.

🚀 Preparing for secondary school

KS2 is an important stage in a child's language-learning journey. Our aim is to help children reach secondary school with:

🗣️ confidence speaking French
👂 strong listening habits
🔤 secure pronunciation foundations
📚 a growing vocabulary
🧩 an understanding of basic grammar
📖 experience reading French
✏️ experience writing French
🌍 cultural awareness
💡 confidence in learning a language

A strong foundation now can make the transition into secondary French much more positive. We don't aim to rush children into secondary-school level work. We aim to make sure they are ready for it.

❤️ Why BELingual?

Small & supportive groups

Children have regular opportunities to speak and participate rather than simply listening to the teacher.

A structured programme

Our lessons follow a clear progression across listening, speaking, reading, writing, phonics, vocabulary and grammar.

Fun with purpose

Games, songs and roleplay are used to reinforce learning and build confidence — not simply to fill lesson time.

Real communication

Children are encouraged to use French for meaningful purposes and gradually adapt familiar language.

Regular retrieval

Previously learned language is revisited so that children develop stronger long-term recall.

Individual encouragement

We recognise that children develop at different speeds and encourage every child to make progress from their own starting point.

Cultural curiosity

French learning includes opportunities to explore the wider French-speaking world.

👥 Create your own KS2 French group

Would your child like to learn French with friends or siblings? We can create a new small KS2 French group around your children. This can be ideal for:

👫 Friendship groups
👧👦 Siblings
🏘️ Local community groups
📅 Families looking for a different day or time

You bring the group. We provide the planning, teaching and structure.

🇫🇷 Start building confident French

Learning a language is a journey.

At KS2, children have the opportunity to move beyond their first words and begin using French to communicate, express opinions, understand others and discover another culture.

Our aim is to make that journey enjoyable while giving children the skills and confidence they can take with them into secondary school and beyond.

Fun lessons. Real progress. Strong foundations for the future.
