Are you completing your Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) and looking for an enjoyable and meaningful way to develop a new skill?
At BELingual, we support young people who are completing their DofE Award through structured language learning and, where suitable opportunities are available, supervised volunteering experiences.
You can develop a new language skill as part of your DofE Skills section or explore suitable volunteering opportunities supporting educational activities. Where appropriate, you may be able to undertake both as separate DofE activities.
Please note: Your chosen DofE activity should be discussed with your DofE Leader before you begin. Your DofE Leader will confirm whether the activity is suitable for your Award and advise you on the requirements you need to meet.
🗣️ DofE Skills Section: Learn a New Language
Learning a language is a fantastic way to develop a valuable skill while building confidence, communication skills and cultural awareness.
At BELingual, you can learn a language as part of your DofE Skills activity, subject to approval by your DofE Leader.
We offer language tuition in:
- 🇩🇪 German
- 🇫🇷 French
- 🇪🇸 Spanish
- 🇮🇹 Italian
- 🤟 British Sign Language (BSL)
Lessons may be available as one-to-one tuition or in small groups, depending on your chosen language, availability and requirements.
Whether you are a complete beginner or already have some knowledge of a language, we can help you develop your skills progressively throughout your DofE activity.
What could you develop?
Depending on your chosen language and starting level, you may work on:
- Vocabulary and everyday communication
- Speaking and conversation
- Listening and comprehension
- Pronunciation

- Cultural awareness
- Confidence using your language in real-life situations
Your learning will be structured around your individual level and goals, with regular opportunities to practise and develop your skills.
Language tuition is a paid service
Our language lessons are provided as a professional tuition service and are subject to our standard lesson fees.
If you choose language learning as your DofE Skills activity, the tuition you receive is separate from any volunteering opportunity you may undertake with BELingual.
Your DofE Leader will confirm whether your chosen language-learning activity meets the requirements of your Award.

🤝 DofE Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteering is a great way to give your time, support others and develop valuable personal skills and experience.
BELingual may, where appropriate opportunities are available, be able to offer young people the opportunity to gain experience in an educational environment and support younger learners under the direct supervision of a BELingual teacher.
We do not require volunteers to deliver our lessons or replace members of our teaching team. Any volunteering opportunity is offered as a potential learning and development opportunity for the young person, while also providing additional support and encouragement to younger learners.
Depending on the activity, a volunteer may be able to:
- Support suitable educational and language-learning activities.
- Encourage younger learners during games and activities.
- Help prepare age-appropriate learning materials.
- Support younger learners with appropriate activities under the direction of the teacher.
- Help create a positive and engaging learning environment.
- Develop confidence, communication and interpersonal skills through working with younger learners.
All volunteering activities are:
- Unpaid.
- Subject to availability and suitability.
- Structured around the volunteer's experience and development.
- Carried out under the supervision of a BELingual teacher or designated adult.
- Designed so that the volunteer does not replace teaching staff or count towards required staffing or supervision ratios.
Volunteers will not teach lessons independently, be responsible for supervising children or be left alone with learners.
Important Information for DofE Participants
If you are considering volunteering with BELingual as part of your Duke of Edinburgh's Award, please discuss the proposed activity with your DofE Leader before starting.
BELingual does not determine whether an activity meets the requirements of the DofE Award. Your DofE Leader will advise you on whether the proposed activity is suitable for your individual programme.
As BELingual is a private language tuition provider, we recommend that participants provide their DofE Leader with full details of the proposed volunteering activity before making any arrangements.
Any volunteering opportunity with BELingual will also be subject to appropriate safeguarding arrangements and parental consent where required.

Potentially, yes, but these would be two separate activities.

The two activities should have clearly separate aims and records.

The required timescale depends on whether you are completing Bronze, Silver or Gold.

Can I volunteer with BELingual?
We may be able to offer suitable volunteering opportunities, subject to availability and the nature of the activity.
As some opportunities may involve being present around children and young people, all arrangements must be carefully planned with appropriate safeguarding and supervision measures in place.
Participants should obtain confirmation from their DofE Leader that the proposed activity is suitable before beginning their placement.
Is DofE volunteering paid?
No.
DofE volunteering is undertaken on an unpaid basis.
Any volunteering opportunity offered through BELingual will be separate from our paid language tuition services.
If you choose to learn a language as your DofE Skills activity, our normal lesson fees will apply.
Can I complete both Skills and Volunteering with BELingual?
Potentially, yes, where suitable opportunities are available.
Language tuition and volunteering would be treated as two separate activities, with separate aims and records.
Your DofE Leader will confirm whether both activities meet the requirements of your Award.
Can BELingual sign off my DofE section?
BELingual can provide appropriate attendance, progress and completion information to support your DofE activity where applicable.
