Learning a language is a great way to develop a practical skill over time.

With BELingual, your teenager can work towards personal French-learning goals through regular lessons and independent practice.

Lessons can focus on areas such as:

The programme is adapted to the learner's starting level and aims to build confidence as well as practical language ability.

This programme is suitable for teenagers who:

• Are completing their Bronze, Silver or Gold DofE
• Want to use French as their Skills activity
• Already study French at school
• Are beginners or have some previous French experience
• Want structured support and regular progression
• Enjoy learning languages and want to develop a skill outside the classroom

No particular level of French is required.

Potentially, yes, but these would be two separate activities.

Skills

Attend paid German lessons each week to develop your language skills.

Volunteering

Undertake an unpaid, supervised volunteering placement supporting suitable educational activities, where an appropriate opportunity is available.

The two activities should have clearly separate aims and records.

Your DofE Leader will confirm whether each activity is suitable for your Award.

BELingual may be able to support schools, families and DofE coordinators looking for suitable language-learning or volunteering opportunities for young people. We can discuss:

• Language learning as a potential DofE Skills activity
• One-to-one or small-group language tuition
• Suitable volunteering opportunities, where available
• Supervised volunteering arrangements
• Attendance and progress records
• Supporting documentation where appropriate

All activities are subject to availability, suitability and the individual requirements of the participant's DofE programme. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

For example, a learner might work towards being able to:

Introduce themselves, talk about family and interests, describe their routine and discuss everyday topics.

Order food, ask for directions, shop, travel and communicate with other French speakers.

Develop listening skills through conversations, recordings, songs and other authentic material.

Work with age-appropriate texts, messages, menus, websites and other everyday French.

Build confidence writing sentences, messages, descriptions and short pieces of French.

Explore French-speaking countries, traditions, food, music and everyday life.

The aim is not simply to complete worksheets. 

It's to help your teenager actually use French.

For DofE Skills, we recommend individual tuition so that the programme can be tailored to the learner.

Lessons are normally arranged on a regular weekly basis, subject to tutor availability.

There is no annual registration fee.

You can also create a self-formed French group of 2–6 learners.

2 students — £80 per lesson
3 students — £90 per lesson
4 students — £100 per lesson
5 students — £110 per lesson
6 students — £120 per lesson

This can be a great option for friends completing their DofE at the same time.

At the beginning, we'll establish the learner's current level and discuss what they would like to achieve.

Lessons can then be structured around clear areas of development.

Over time, the learner should be able to see their progress in areas such as:

Confidence → Vocabulary → Speaking → Understanding → Accuracy → Independence

Regular practice between lessons can also help reinforce what has been learned.

The DofE Award itself remains the responsibility of the participant and their DofE centre/Leader.

Before starting, participants should check with their DofE Leader that their proposed French activity is suitable for their Skills section and confirm what evidence or progress information they need.

We can provide appropriate information about the learner's attendance and progress where required, subject to the arrangements agreed with the tutor.

No. They can start French with us as a beginner or use BELingual to develop French they already study at school.

Learning a language can be used as a Skills activity, but the participant should confirm their proposed activity with their DofE Leader before starting.

No. BELingual provides the French tuition and supports the learner's development. The participant's DofE Leader/centre is responsible for the DofE requirements and sign-off.

We recommend regular weekly lessons for a DofE Skills programme. The exact arrangement depends on the learner's goals and tutor availability.

Our standard private tuition session is 60 minutes.
