Why learn a new language?
There are many reasons to learn a new language. The main one is that learning a foreign language can literally change your life. It will increase your self-esteem, can give your professional life a boost... Developing an understanding of a foreign language offers a wide array of benefits. It will provide you with the tools to communicate with people all over the world.
It will also help you develop new career options. Whether you’re an entrepreneur looking to export or import or simply someone who does a lot of business trips, being multilingual could open new doors for you.
Moreover, competition is fierce. Adding new skills to your resume by learning to speak a foreign language could set you apart from the competition and help you climb the ladder in your chosen career. Moreover, polyglots often realise that they are more understanding of other cultural differences because they a foreign language.
If the above reasons haven’t convinced you of the advantages of learning a new language, then this one will: it slows the aging process! Learning a new language can help your brain stay active as you age. It can also increase your creativity and improves your memory. An active mind is a creative mind.
Additionally, I have come to realise that learning a foreign language helps you understand your native language better. Children usually learn English through memorisation and practice rather than having a deep understanding of the grammar and conjugation.
Speaking in a foreign language helps you notice these differences in structure and gain a better understanding of how your own language functions. This is ideal for writers or other professionals who would like to improve their native skills on top of learning the new language.
Why learn a foreign language in secondary school?
In truth, passing your GCSEs today is no longer enough. How to stand out from the others when 80% of young people pass their exams each year? So inevitably, more and more additional skills are required. And among these skills, learning a foreign language has become absolutely essential.
Your child's future is based on today’s decisions. Language learning is still very low in the UK. So, if your child wants to stand apart from the others, mastering a second language will definitely help as it allows us to develop our cerebral faculties. Researchers have found that our attention and concentration skills increase dramatically when learning a foreign language. And the more intense the learning, the more obvious the results. A good reason to follow an intensive program over the holidays.
Moreover, it provides better chances of landing a good job in the future or advancing in a career. Learning a second language will also give your child an insight into other cultures. They will be more prepared and confident to travel the world and explore other cultures. Working on your language skills is not only good for your brain, it also promotes openness to others.
In the short term, we focus on getting the students ready to take their French GCSE exams by following the national curriculum. We cover the 3 themes in terms of vocabulary building and 8 tenses as well as grammar. We also help students better understand the exams and the mark scheme to help them achieve a higher grade and do mock exams which helps highlight areas where they need support but also helps with time management and boost self-confidence.
In the long term, our bilingual brains are more focused and as such students are less distracted. Learning foreign languages also improves creativity. There are also cognitive and emotional benefits to being bilingual. And among these benefits, there is one that is not necessarily obvious: it improves our tolerance which is called “cultural competence”.
Why learn a foreign language in primary?
Improving the skills of students in modern languages is a priority in France and in many other European Countries. Language learning holds a fundamental place in the construction of citizenship, in the enrichment of the personality and in openness to the world. It also promotes the employability of young people in France and abroad.
A child's brain is a bit like a box of new Play-Doh, it's malleable and can take any shape. With age, the paste hardens a little and more effort is needed for the same result. So, the earlier we start, the better!
Moreover, before the age of 6, the child's brain is at an ideal stage of development for developing early bilingualism.
The brain is a muscle. The earlier and the more we expose it to a new language, the easier it is to develop your child’s cognitive abilities. Thus, they can learn more and faster.
This early exposure also helps prepare children’s brains to better meet the challenges of a multilingual world when they reach adulthood.
Moreover, in primary children don’t have the pressure of GCSEs or A-level and can therefore learn in a fun and relaxed environment and enjoy the language. The basics such as learning to count in French, the alphabet, being able to introduce oneself or talk about a family member are introduced through games that can be continued at home if the child wishes.
Additionally, research has proven that learning a foreign language helps to learn other languages! Children learning a foreign language perform better on analytical and visual tests, faster and with fewer errors than monolingual children.
In short, children exposed to 2 languages, such as French and English for example, demonstrate greater mental flexibility with the ability to develop creativity and to adapt to change. It also helps children gain self-confidence.
Why learn a foreign language at a young age?
Early childhood is the best time for our children to learn a foreign language. The brain of children is fascinating, it is more powerful than that of adults as it is developing. A baby listens and assimilates sounds even before understanding them, which is why a second language can be instilled in your child as early as pregnancy.
From the age of 3, children know how to form groups of words and even begins to formulate complete sentences. They are still learning their mother tongue: it's a great time to slip in new vocabulary words into their vocabulary!
Introduce bilingualism to children on a regular basis, either by enrolling to private tuition or by opting to weekly small group learning so they can interact and learn with other children their age.
Learning a second language also develops your child’s cognitive capabilities. This gymnastics of the brain allows your child to create new connections that facilitate other learnings. It is then easier for the child to communicate, concentrate, understand, and memorise new concepts.
Learning a foreign language allows your child to open to the world by meeting a new culture. Bilingualism therefore brings personal enrichment and greater tolerance of differences which are essential qualities in today’s diverse society.
Bilingual children have an advantage over monolingual children. Children start learning a new language in Junior school. We prepare them for it by following the national curriculum. A bilingual student will necessarily find it much easier and can excel with ease in this subject. By choosing to teach your child a second language, you are also preparing for their future.
